AVOCET was designed by Thomas Harrison Butler in 1911 and is one of his earliest known surviving designs. The original MEMORY was one of THB’s favourite and he sailed aboard her on the Broads when in the ownership of the Suffling brothers of Cantley. In 1932 Frank Haywood, chief architect of the City of London instructed R J Prior and Son of Burnham on Crouch to build to the MEMORY design with a modern Bermudian rig. This was the first yacht built by Priors who were predominantly barge builders. They took extreme care to build AVOCET to a very high standard. A photograph of AVOCET was on their headed note paper for many years. Frank Haywood cruised extensively in AVOCET, mostly on the East Coast until 1954 when he purchased the Dunkirk Little Ship TRIMILLIA. The current owner bought AVOCET in 1987 and during a period of two years restored the yacht to a high standard, sailing in the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel. AVOCET has been laid-up for a good number of years and offers the opportunity to purchase one of the rarest HB designed yachts in the country.
